Operating as quiet professionals, preferring to remain in the shadows, Backlit is a fully licensed private investigation agency located in Ontario, Canada.

Founding Partner, Daryl Somes

Daryl is the owner and operator of Backlit Resource Group Inc. He entered the Investigative field in 2007. Prior to his time in the private sector, he served in the Canadian Armed Forces Reserves as an infantryman from 2004 to 2011. Daryl is a court qualified expert in the identification of counterfeit goods and has provided investigative technique training to security personnel around the world.
Daryl specializes in:
anti-counterfeiting, trademark and intellectual property investigations, surveillance, fraud investigations, open-source intelligence (OSINT), locating assets, intelligence gathering, major case management, and undercover operations.

Operations Manager

Our Operations Manager holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminology, has extensive experience in both the public and private sectors and is considered an expert witness in regards to cultural and language interpretations (Court of Queen’s Bench of Alberta, 2018).
He specializes in investigating abnormalities, brand protection, risk mitigation and speaks five languages. He has actively participated in the coordination and execution of time-sensitive investigations across Canada, many of which have lead to criminal and civil prosecutions.

Special Operations & Surveillance Division

Over the past 20 years, we have gained a strong reputation in the Risk Management and Corporate Security circles throughout Ontario. This team specializes in managing investigators; carrying a heavy caseload; liaising with clients; logistics; case management; and high-risk terminations/close-quarters protection. During his career at the largest private investigation agencies in Canada, the Special Operations & Surveillance division team lead has developed and implemented “best practices” regarding background searches, surveillance and report writing.

Backlit’s investigators have decades of experience in the public and private sectors. Our personnel are trained in surveillance, undercover operations, undercover, OSINT, anti-counterfeiting and intellectual property matters, information analysis and more.
Our investigators speak the following languages:
